vallee de la Clarée
14 - 19 March 2004
day 1 : Chamonix - Névache - refuge I Ré Magi
Leaving Nevache we have a picnic, followed by an ascent opposite one "Cheminée de Fée" to the Col des Thures (2194m), passing by valleys of traditional farmhouses. We walk down opposite the Rois Mages, Balthazar, Melchior and Gaspard into the Vallee Etroite and our refuge (1765m). The valley is inhabited but has been preserved and although it faces Italy is still very French.
ascent : + 600 m descent : - 450 m
day 2 : refuge I Ré Magi - refuge du Mont Thabor
No descents today, only upward through the valley and then onto several beautiful sun drenched slopes to reach a plateau dominated by the Grand Sera and La Roche Bernaude. The col de la Valle Etoile (2434m) is not very far from the welcoming refuge (2500m) that is reached by a short traverse. The St Marguerite lakes at the foot of Mont Thabor are a magical place.
ascent : + 750 m
day 3 : refuge du Mont Thabor - refuge des Drayères
A long day in an natural world that's close to high mountain through narrow valleys scattered with lakes. The itineraries vary and the choices depend on the snow conditions. The ascent of Mont Thabor is one possibility and probably the longest but guarantees a unique view of the Belverdere. Night in a CAF Refuge des Drayeres (2180 m) at the end of the Claree valley between the Cerces and the Thabor.
ascent : + 900 m descent : - 1 100 m
day 4 : refuge des Drayères - refuge du Chardonnet
A rest day taking advantage of the peace and quiet in the Claree Valley. The descent is notable due to the farmhouses and chapels, either isolated or in hamlets in this valley. From the Fontcouverte chalets (1850m), an easy uphill walk allows us to get to a pretty refuge (1850m) situated in mixed surroundings of high abrupt rock faces and beautiful sloping valleys. All the wonderful contrasts of the Cerces are here.
ascent : + 400 m descent : - 400 m
day 5 : refuge du Chardonnet - refuge de Buffères
2 cols are scheduled for this day : the col du Raisin followed by a first descent into the Grand Vallon which allows us to join the Chemin du Roy, by a long traverse on a large ski run covering the Guisanne valley, opposite the Meije and Mont Pelvoux. A short ascent to Col de Buffere and then a descent to the refuge (2100m).
ascent : + 800 m descent : - 900 m
day 6 : refuge de Buffères - Névache
Returning opposite the Ecrins mountain range by an uphill the length of the Sagne Noire Mountain to the Porte de Cristol (2483m), before reaching Nevache. Arriving at 3pm after a day in diverse and stunning landscapes.
ascent : + 650 m descent : - 1 200 m
