ice climbing This activity is one of the most serious yet playful and is a subtle mixture of skill and intuition. We have to judge the cohesion and composition of the ice from the texture sensed from the first placements of the ice axe, the colour of the ice and decide the best places to move to. It is important to have sharpened your tools and strengthened your biceps so you can respond dynamically to the challenges that present themselves. The best period for ice-climbing is from the end of December to the end of February. Each year is different and the ice and weather conditions vary day to day from valley to valley so we can only anticipate the best place to climb a few days beforehand. The number of participants is limited to 2, so that safety and an enjoyable learning experience are guaranteed. There are so many possibilities in the Chamonix valley and its surrounding areas (Trient, val Ferret, Cogne, Aravis, etc...). According to your experience, your desire or your motivation you will second the climb until you feel secure enough to lead the climb, placing your own protection and installing a safe belay. For an adventure ... A day - week-end for 2 people max. To improve or to learn, The idea is to gain a total understanding of protection (anchorage, using ice-screws, belays, Abalakov, efficient rope-work etc, ...) and to climb a few icefalls. Courses from 3 - 5 days for 2 people max. A weekend special Why not combine : - a day's introduction to ice climbing followed by a day of off-piste skiing ? - perhaps off-piste skiing on the Grand Montets one day and the following day the Valley Blanche ? - Ski touring followed by ice climbing ...
