Towards Autonomy / Self sufficiency 4 - 9 august 2004

day 1 : lacs de la Remuaz et des Chèserys - lac Blanc
The route towards the Lac Blanc is original and off the beaten track. Map reading micro relief, understanding the terrain and walking in groups are this days topics. We will definitely see marmots, charmois and ibex and maybe lagopedes.

day 2 : pointe Noire et lac de Pormenaz
This is a route I am especially fond of. A good deal of this walk is along discreet paths taken by shepherds and it allows us to tie in the topic of orientation. As we walk down we can consider the idea of security in dangerous or difficult passes and we will talk about the pastoral life and of plants and geology.

day 3 : col Blanc - Mer de Glace
A day in the High Mountains at the foot of the Chamonix peaks. The walk starts amongst a mixture of stones and huge blocks of the old moraine. The walk couldn't be more varied on this awkward terrain. Reading the environment and its dangers, the life of glaciers and alpinism are the main topics of the day.

day 4 : montagne de Barberine - refuge de Loriaz
Why not bivouac out under the stars or spend a night in a refuge to make the most of being in the mountains. We will talk about security and survival tactics as well as surviving for several days and the equipment necessary.

day 5 : refuge de Loriaz - Tré-les-Eaux
The col de la Terrasse allows us to join the very beautiful valley of Tre les Eaux. Several points painted on the rocks indicate the passage but the rest are less well defined and this route will test all your experience.

day 6 : col de Barmerousse
A splendid walk on limestone in les Fiz. More map reading and orienteering on this unmarked route. We end the day with a little more geology about limestone and its dangers and look at the specific flora.

These itineraries are susceptible to change depending on the weather and the ability of the group.
