the Aiguilles Rouges 24 - 29 august 2004

day 1 : chalets and lac de Pormenaz - refuge de Moëde Anterne Departing from Servoz a regular yet beautiful path leads us to the chalets of Pormenaz in the high mountain pastures. In these undulating mountains, the chalets have remained unchanged for centuries and offer a fantastic view of the Mont Blanc. Using the paths the shepherds take, we traverse along a plateau strewn with rocks to reach the lake. Skinny-dipping is possible for the more courageous before going to the nearby refuge. This is a beautiful trip and the landscape of high mountain cliffs will amaze you.
ascent : + 1 000 m descent : - 100 m

day 2 : Mont Buet - refuge de la Pierre à Bérard
This is the longest day in distance and uphill and downhill gradients. To reach the summit of Mont Buet (3096m, called "the ladies Mont blanc") an early morning start is essential. We take the usual route although it is a roundabout one going up a small and wild pass to the col de Salenton to reach the celebrated mineral summit. We descend to a hospitable refuge where the marmots shyly appear and the stoats jump between the rocks.
ascent : + 1 200 m descent : - 1 200 m

day 3 : Mont Oreb - hôtel du Buet
After a short descent, we walk up an original path completely off the beaten track between scrub and short rock bands that help us climb to the summit of Mont Oreb by crystallised slopes. It is seldom climbed and offers us a magnificent view of the Tre-les-Eaux valley and the north side of the Aiguilles Rouges. Coming down by the same route, we join the Berard valley and further along we follow a stream that leads us down to the little hamlet of Le Buet. Night spent in a comfortable hotel in Vallorcine amidst chalets from another era.
ascent : + 700 m descent : - 1 300 m

day 4 : lacs de la Remuaz et des Chèserys - refuge du lac Blanc
The Lac Blanc is a well-known and beautiful place, especially in the evening, when as the sunsets the day-trippers return to the Valley. It is my own bet that I can take you to the Lac Blanc without meeting a living soul apart from the usual mountain wildlife such as the marmots, chamois and ibex. It is amongst this mixture of mountain activity that we veer off the beaten paths between rhododendrons, junipers and piles of fallen rocks to emerge above the Lac Blanc (2350m). The refuge is built beside the lake and becomes magical in the evening when it is calm and secluded.
ascent : + 1 000 m descent : - 100 m

day 5 : lacs noirs et lac Cornu - refuge de Bellachat
A day walking along the mountain paths overlooking Chamonix, which permit us to see the prestigious summits of the Mont Blanc Range and the impressive glaciers. Our paths cross some lakes, Le lac Cornu and les Lacs Noir found amongst mineral areas. After the panoramic summit of Brevent (2525m), it is a short walk down to the refuge (2130m). The end of Chamonix Valley feels close but it feels good to be at altitude able to look at life on the valley floor ...
ascent : + 700 m descent : - 800 m

jour 6 : aiguillette des Houches - retour Servoz
A short ascent brings us to the Aiguillette des Houches (2285) and then it is a long descent into Servoz. The walk past the Pierre Blanche across the high mountain pastures of Chailloux to the agreeable coolness of the woods works up a thirst .
A long drink at a nearby bar, some tears and then the time has come to separate amidst promises to meet again soon !
ascent : + 300 m descent : - 1 500 m
